Addicted To The Machine Tanks roll out, still in doubt; who’s the enemy and what have they done? Ground forces there, planes to the air; to force from the end of a gun. Media in wait to fan the hate of who’s dirt or who’s clean. Without question or say, they strike anyway, addicted to the machine. Cable time, a thousand lines, of unconscionable length and breadth, more than enough, to sit and be numb, to entertain yourself to death. Primetime sports, the movies, the news, all arrive in the digital scene, as your life unnoticed, gets sucked up and lost; addicted to the machine. Night life, bright lights, to the hot spots and cool rides. Jumping fences, indulging senses Taking the walk on the wild side. Voices echo, “stay, don’t go; we’ll find where you’ve never been.” But the deeper you look, the more you get hooked; addicted to the machine. Computer networks worldwide; information on the go. The Internet captures and you’re enraptured; so much of it all to know. No way to get all the data; there’s too much to be heard and seen. Stealing the night and intellectual rights; addicted to the machine.

Fool That You Are Old man, give it up. Your chance, your time has already come and passed. Make way for the bright, shining future That, the new hope, the young and fast. Fool that you are to think you’ll make something happen after all these years have gone by. Fool that you are to think you could make a difference again, in anybody’s lives; Fool that you are. Old man; there you are, standing proud and strong Thinking you still got something they need. Old man, you’re alone, up on that stage all wrong, with nothing but your dignity. But fool that you are maybe you’ll make something happen after all those years had gone by. Old fool that you are You might still make a difference again, in somebody’s life; Fool that you are.

Cate's Gone 03:44
Cate’s Gone Not too many offers for work arrive, Since the economy took a dive. But I’ll go through the paperwork anyways get a check in the mail in a couple days. Got no ambition to play or sing, don’t feel like doing much of anything. I’ll go through the motions; do the workingman’s bit, but it’s hard when my heart’s not into it. Cate’s gone. Cate’s gone. I should just move on, but it just feels wrong. Cate’s gone. So done with thinking thoughts so deep, I’m sitting here; so tired, but I just can’t sleep. What should I have done before we fell apart, to change her mind; to change her heart? Too many things point back to me, what I didn’t say and do; what I could or couldn’t be. But now, all I want is to understand what it is I need to do to get her back again. Cate’s gone. Cate’s gone. I should just move on, but it just feels wrong. It just feels wrong. Cate’s gone. Cate’s gone.

This Is What You Are This is what you are, This is who you are, This is why you are. To be happy with the things you spent your time to do, To accept reality for all you will never do. To feel the joy and sorrow, to know their tender heart, To be of use to others; to share your tender heart. This is what you are, This is who you are, This is why you are. To understand that others see from their own point of view, To understand and see from another’s point of view. To reach out and to touch forgoing your own need, To be there at the time of another in such need. This is what you are, This is who you are, This is why you are. To be willing to be humbled because of what they say, To stand for your beliefs in spite of what they say. To know, respect and understand the limits of your dream, To fear not the challenge but the purpose of your dream. This is what you are, This is who you are, This is why you are. To be able to be sorry when you’ve wronged another’s heart, To be able to forgive when someone else has wronged your heart. To see another’s gift without you needing to be loved, To share your gift with others; to love and to be loved. This is what you are, This is who you are, This is why you are.

The Taken 05:16
The Taken Some are meant to be fountains, some are meant to be drains; some will share their fortunes, others amass their gains. Some will give their all with no thought of recompense as the callous will assess how to profit at another’s expense. And the takers they will take and take without end, as the taken are taken and taken again. Some will walk their lifes with a shining light of trust inside as some are meant to bleed that light, never to be satisfied. The gentle soul will bestow all they have without purse or plan, to others in the guise of a friend that will take everything they can. And the takers will take and take without end, as the taken are taken and taken again. Some, over time, having taken advantage for so long, so lost in their own desperate needs, they can’t see anymore what they’re doing is wrong. The taken; they're easy to find, as in darkness; their light shines free. In a willingness to be used, they’re perceived as pathetic and weak. But their hope is to help, any and all who have fallen in need. Making a difference within their own special belief. And the takers will take and they'll take towards their end as the taken are taken and taken again. And the takers they'll just take and continue taking without end, from the taken who are taken and taken again.

Get Up, And Do It Again Think I know what you’re thinking from that look on your face, things ain’t going so easy and you want to just get away. Might be a lot easier if you just got in some other game, but who’s to say if you went some other place, things wouldn’t be the same? Anyway, you got more than enough reasons to stick around here now, your wife and kids, their food, the car, the mortgage on the house. I see myself in you, maybe too many years ago to tell, and I know when I feel like that, the perspective that serves me well, is to get up and do it again. I get up and do it again. And no matter how hard it gets, I just remember about them, and I just get up, and do it again. I get up, and do it again. I been here for a while, friend, going down this same long road, I’m like a locomotive pulling boxcars; I got a long, heavy load. Every one with a need; their own special dream to cultivate. Doing the climbs, I get weary at times, and dragged down by the weight, but still, I get up, and do it again. I get up and do it again. and no matter how hard it gets, I remember about them, I just get up, and do it again. I get up and do it again. There’s times at night, I got this pounding in my head, There’s times in the morning I don’t want to leave my bed. I get this aching in my back and pains that won’t go away, With the way things can be, it’s a wonder to me, I keep going on day to day. But I get up and do it again. I get up and do it again. and no matter how hard it gets I just keep remembering about them and I get up, and do it again. Yeah, I get up and do it again.

The Angel By My Side She moves in small circles with concern and care; her influence felt by all even though she hardly seems there. In and out, come and go, and quickly she moves on, to the many out there still in need before her day is gone. Oh, but when we’re together I’m the one with the jazzy stride that towers over and shadows the Angel by my side. That’s me making all the noise, building up myself, as she apologizes for my mistakes and well, for everything else. So I’m Quick to anger, slow to forgive, and heaven help if you should tread on me, but she sees from love’s filter, for all that I can be. We’re a study of opposites, and it’s a wonder we coincide, and that’s me standing pretentiously with the Angel by my side. I know the score, what matters most, what it is I should do, but it’s easier to pretend that I have nothing to offer to. After all, she’s does good enough for us both, without causing a stir I just hope when I get to paradise, I can just say, “I’m with her.” Oh, she’s off to save the world and I should really take her lead, but I haven’t come to terms with accepting what I need. So I’m the king of the hill, the man on top, to impress all of them, as she casts a knowing glance, but loves me for who I am. Oh, I may fool everyone else that I’m the one who can’t be denied, but deep inside, who matters most is the Angel by my side. It may seem to you I stand alone, self-absorbed and full of pride, but I’m the man who’s so in love with the Angel by my side.

I’m Here For You When the world closes in, time and time again and your rationale is gone and you don’t want to go on, When you cower with fear as the shadows draw near. I’m here for you. When you’ve lost your style and you can’t seem to smile. When your best ain’t good enough and you want a touch of love, When you can’t cut a break and you’re stuck in your mistake. When you need that helping hand that will always understand, I’m here for you. When friends aren’t around and you’re defeated and down. When you need comfort and warm, to come in from the storm. When you’re lost and alone and you’re too far from home, I’m here for you. When you’re sad and ashamed for the problems you’ve made and you’ve come to the bend and you’re sure it’s the end, and there’s no way out and you’re confused with doubt. When nothing can be done and you don’t want to be on the run, I’m here for you. When you just can’t explain why you’re this way again. When you need someone there to just listen and care, that will be on your side and won’t judge or deride, I’m here for you. When you dread and remorse that you’ve steered the wrong course. When you can’t say what it is but you know that it is. When you need that true friend that you know won’t condemn you for all you haven’t got and for all that you’re not; who understands with heart what it’s like to be in the dark. I’m here for you.

Escape 04:38
Escape Trapped out there in your own nowhere existence, dissipating time, doing whatever to survive. Compromising beliefs to meet other people's thinking sad to say, you’re living someone else’s life. There’s so much to do, so little time to do it, but there you are following what you know to be a lie. you see where you were, see what’s ahead and the only difference is the wasted time gone by. Escape. Disconcerted voices cry out for you to follow instructions you’re in no position to ignore. But the noise of their stilted one-sided opinions drowns out your own precious inner voice even more. Inside, somehow, you already seem to know what you truly want to do; want to become. That voice; your heart, your intuition calls out for you to have the courage to move on. Escape. You’ve no need to be living in some nowhere existence, doing whatever you have to just to survive. You should stop compromising to meet other’s expectations and you need to stop living someone else’s life. That first step to get away is by far, the hardest and then to go out through that uncertain door. But hey, you know your time here on earth is limited, as are your dreams, so what are you waiting for? Escape.

Gift Of Charity I was the least to support, the first to voice concern, the last to understand anything of her good turn, her biggest stumbling block from all I could not discern, her doing God’s work through the gift of charity. I was insensitive when she needed my compassion the most, I was a million miles away when she wanted me in close and I never caught the vision as she stood guard at the post to do what she could, with her gift of charity. And for all the wrong reasons from all the wrong signs, with all the right words said at all the wrong times. I was off fighting windmills while she was out on the front as she moved with her kindness to meet them who stood in want and I calculated the cost before she was even done, never to glimpse her gift of charity. And in spite of my ignorance to her purpose in play, in spite of the interferences along the way, she still managed to get the Lord’s work done anyway with sincere care and her gift of charity. And after it’s all done and as it stares back at me, I perceive more clearly now what it was that she could see; the good that could be done to help those in need, a caring heart, to do whatever I can, as with her special gift of charity. To do what I can, with sincere care and the gift of charity. The gift of charity.

She Makes Me Complete Hard to know with the way things go whether what I do makes sense from day to day. A guilt resides, my resolve divides and my driving force just fades away. As twilight nears all reason disappears and I’m left in my sad defeat, But within this space, my saving grace is that she makes me complete. Tied up in knots with such grand thoughts that a sense of doubt begins to press. I think I hold something of gold, but I’m the only one to make sense of the mess. And some ask why I waste my time rambling down that aimless street, But with each new day I go my way because she makes me complete. Although it’s late, I’m in a state; I feel inspired to find my time and space. If I get through and these words ring true, I know the pieces will all fall into place. And if the chance arrives for just one more time, I have to stand and take my feet, I may rise or fall, but no matter, for after all, she makes me complete. As twilight nears all reason disappears and I’m left in my sad defeat, But in my heart of hearts there’s no missing parts because she makes me complete. Oh, she makes me complete

The Doomsday Prophet The words from his scriptures say the time’s is almost here. And he feels a sense of urgency; without dismay or fear. He looks to the skies, waiting for the dawn of that new day that’s about to come. He will not side, but he sees those positioning for power; And it causes him concern for that approaching hour. As the little things he sees, are falling into place he feels the impending doom and that there’s nowhere safe. He has his own clear understanding of the times. But It’s a wicked generation that seeks after a sign, so he pours over volumes of manuscripts and books finding truth is not always clearly the way it looks. He knows from the strange looks and the way that they react his friends and family don’t understand and have taken a few steps back. But without his heightened senses, he knows they can’t see the game, so he’ll forgive them for now, and hope the Lord will do the same. With the last days upon him, and him felling he’s not quite there he arms himself with his scriptures and the power of prayer. And he holds other keys to doors he may have need to unlock, to ward off brother Satan and his unfortunate flock. No mortal man may know of that day or hour, yet hecalls out to all from up on his watchtower. Letting all who will listen, that they will know without a doubt, that the prophecies of old are coming true, and their time is running out.

Addicted To The Machine : A Lyrical Journey
....he goes by the artist name of Lord Baldwin. A double album of 2011, "Addicted To The Machine", caught me by surprise. I thought I could never like an album better than his double delight, " A Flash Of Brilliance". I was proven wrong. I make tapestries in metallic threads of brilliant colours and they often impress upon me their complexity. This is how this double album is, very rich in emotions and lyrical complexity, both personally and intellectually.
" Addicted To The Machine "is a deeply introspective achievement, through which runs a noticeable vein of concern and melancholy, in the tradition of the best bards this country has produced, like Bob Dylan and Neil Young, to just name two bright stars that come to mind when listening to Lord Baldwin's music. This 2011 gift is so rich in mood and the way the artist is able to canvas these moods to the colours of his voice and instruments, from the piano to the harmonica to the guitar, the tambourine, the drum. His music becomes this way a visual experience as well, as were it a painting unfolding in our minds, one we can see with our inner eye and heart. The colours he creates are warm and varied, and reveal a wise and seasoned soul, that knows the challenges and conundrums life brings us along the way, amid the mystery of personal destiny tied to the larger dimensions of power and its often dubious role in our lives as they are marked by political and societal patterns and edicts.

The opening song of Disk 01, as Lord Baldwin numbered them, the title song, "Addicted To The Machine" has a light hearted tune that masks and at the same time emphasizes the dire situation of our addiction to technology and the hypnotic control the media has over our psyches , politically as well as socially as a result of its permeating every fibre of our existence and daily habits.
" Fool That You Are " is a candid song about getting older and realizing our limitations and the concern of staying relevant.
" The Taken " is a highly insightful and very effective song about the eternal conflict between the meek and the aggressive, putting a clever spin on the wisdom of dignity in the face of greed and selfishness.
" Get Up, And Do It Again ", is a resolute take on being a working man providing for his family, and enduring the drudgery of unsatisfying jobs for their sake. It is a song of great energy and determination , with a wink to Neil Young in the clever instrumentation.
" The Angel By My Side" is a beautifully polished song dedicated to his wife; a deeply wise and humble person and the profound presence her love is to the bard's heart and soul.
" World Of To - Morro " is a stunning instrumental piece. It is rare to hear an instrumental song so strong it seems to speak its own language, beyond the need for words. Powerful !
" I'm Here For You " is the story of a concerned father giving encouragement to one of his adult children, it is warm and sincere in its message.
" Escape " is a very effective song encouraging someone who is trapped in a dead end life to get away and follow their dreams while they still can.
The last song on the first disc, " The Doomsday Prophet " is a surprisingly upbeat song with a tambourine and a drum mixed in with the already varied instruments, about the uncertainty of our stressful times.

" Addicted To The Machine " is - and this is just the first part - an album that requires multiple listening, that inspires both introspection and resolve, in a masterful blend that is a delight for the heart, mind and ear. Lord Baldwin reveals himself more fully in this work, more candidly and completely, on a personal level and as a concerned artist , bringing a voice that expresses both hope and concern for humanity at this crucial bend in the road of our collective destinies.
